  1. It's very mysterious, isn't it?

It also depends on which buttons you've pushed on the front panel.  But here's what happens in mine:

    1.  A water spray takes loose food off of the dishes.

    2.  The bottom fills up with hot water, and/or heats up the cold water until it's hot.

    3.  The dish detergent you remembered to put in gets mixed up with the hot water, and the pump in the bottom sprays this mixture all over the dishes and pots.  There's bleach in this detergent, as well as surfactants that make the oils wash away in the water.

    4.  This pumping and spraying continues for a while.

    5.  Now all the dirty water and gross chunks of food get pumped out of the dishwasher and into your sewer system or septic tank.

    6.  More water is pumped in and heated, for the

    7.  Rinse cycle, which removes the rest of the soap.

    8.  Optional spray cycle with different surfactant to make "water spots" go away.

    9.  Optional drying cycle, where everything's heated up until the dishes are dry.
