  1. Actually watermelon need Full Sun and lots of water up until it is approaching the time for ripening at which time don't water often as it will prevent the melon from putting it's efforts into sugar and the melon wont be as sweet.  Former Long Beach resident. Also make sure the ground is not damp and they usually do much better surround by a heavy mulch of Straw not Hay.

    FRUIT DISEASES

There is a plethora of diseases that can affect the melons and unless a person is a expert it's hard to say what the cause is...Most diseases show up right away in the vines and leaves the roots take longer to determine.

  2. oh geez. I've only been trying to grow watermelons for a couple seasons now and am in California as well. Seems like lack of light/sun and too much water might be an issue. They like lots of sun and lots of water. But w/o the sun, water may cause too much damage. Also, I've had issues with the vines wrapping around each other which have choked the other vines.

  3. Yes too much water. Are they sitting in water at times?
