Wyatt Yarish achieves Men’s 800m freestyle gold: Day one – Western Canadian Championships
Wyatt Yarish of MANTA achieved the title of Men’s 800m freestyle by overwhelming his competitors in the 16 and under category on initial day of the 2012 Speedo Western Canadian Championships in Winnipeg, Canada on Thursday, February 16.
With the help of his wonderful start, the 16-year-old Yarish became prominent for the top spot in the first lap. His tremendous start coupled with his powerful stroke, placed Yarish in a prominent lead over his competitors.
Yarish completed his first two rounds of the race in a fastest time of 1 minute and 57.39 seconds. He was trailed by Sterling King of PGB, who stayed 2.46 seconds slower and concluded his 200 metres of the race in a time of 1 minute and 59.85 seconds.
His nerve-wrecking performance continued in the following rounds, where Yarish succeeded in extending lead over his strongest competitor and concluded his first half of the race by clocking a time of 3 minutes and 59.20 seconds. The 16-year-old King remained approximately four seconds apart from his foregoing competitor and covered 400 metres of the race with an effort of 4 minutes and 03.66 seconds.
His efforts continued in the next two rounds, where Yarish extended his lead to almost four seconds and ended his 600 metres of the race in a time of 6 minutes and 03.88 seconds. King remained 3.91 seconds away and enveloped the equivalent distance with a timing of 6 minutes and 07.79 seconds.
With his persistent struggles, Yarish sustained his position in the last two rounds and snared gold medal of the event by touching the wall in a time of 8 minutes and 06.53 seconds. Meanwhile, King elevated his pace in the final round but it was too late to overpower Yarish thus, he seized silver medal of the discipline in 8 minutes and 09.66 seconds.
He stayed almost 3.50 seconds ahead of Jonathan Brown, who reached the podium for bronze medal by producing a time of 8 minutes and 13.06 seconds.
Yarish was overjoyed after clinching first position in the 800m event whereas the session ended after the completion of all events.
