  1. x/2 - 3 = x/5

    x/2 - x/5 = 3

    10(x/2 - x/5) = 10(3)

    5x - 2x = 30

    3x = 30

    x = 30/3

    x = 10

  2. x/2 - 3 = x/5

    Clear fractions by multiplying equation by LCD = 10:

    5x - 30 = 2x

    3x = 30

    x = 10

  3. x/2 - 3 = x/5

    5x/10 - 3 = 2x/10 (multiply 1st fraction by 5 and 2nd by 2 to make both demominators same)

    5x - 3 = 2x (cross off the deniminators to get equation)

    5x - 2x = 3 (bring 2x over to left side of equal sign and -3 onto right side)

    3x = 3 (5x - 2x = 3x)

    x = 3 divde by 3x

    x = 1

    thats how i do it anyway =]

    (PS. when bringing numbers to another side of the equal sign, ALWAYS remember to change the sign [eg. -3 becomes +3, 2x becomes -2x] THE SIGNS BECOME OPPOSITE)
