X-Women Pan American Volleyball Cup starts today – Volleyball latest
The women’s qualifying tournament for 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix tournament is scheduled to start today, Friday, July 1.
The Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) in collaboration with NORCECA (North, Central American and Caribbean Volleyball Federation) has selected two venues for the qualifying tournament, which is generally regarded as the X Women’s Pan American
Volleyball Cup. Both tournament venues are present in the city of Ciudad Juarez in the Chihuahua state of Mexico. The qualification tournament will be attended by Caribbean and South American teams, with a total of 12 teams on board, which have been divided
into two pools:
Pool A – Dominican Republic, Canada, Cuba, Argentina, Chile, and Mexico
Pool B – Costa Rica, Brazil, Peru, Trinidad & Tobago, Puerto Rico, United States
The Colegio de Bachilleres Gymansium will accommodate the teams from Pool A, while the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juarez Pavilion will host the Pool B matches.
The Dominican Republic will enter the competition with the tag of defending champion. In the previous edition of the X Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup in 2010, Dominican Republic defeated Peru in the final showdown. Likewise, the US team finished third.
This year, once again all three medal holders from last year are fully prepared to defend their positions. The rest of the teams have also done their home work and are looking for better rankings.
The qualification tournament will start with the first preliminary round, which will promote the top teams from both pools in the semi-final. Following the set pattern of the tournament, second and third place teams will appear in the crossed quarter-final
matches. The final stage of the tournament will be held on July 8 and 9. Teams with the lowest ranking in both Pools will fight for 11th Place. The successful teams from the quarter-finals will strive for positions three to six, while the losers
will compete for position 7 to10.
The grid of the teams for 2011 edition of FIVB Grand Prix has already been finalised. However, the 2011 X Women Pan American Volleyball Cup will help the top-four NORCECA teams and two top-ranked squads from South America to advance to the 2012 FIVB Grand
Prix.
