XBOX 360 Help!!!!!?

I just got an Xbox 360 today and the guys at Best Buy said that the silver membership would work for online. I know its not permanent, but they said it's a month free trial. So they Xbox came with the silver membership and im wondering if the silver really is a months worth of free trial to play online?? Is it true?? Please help. People who have actually had this problem or know the answer would be a real help. Thanks
