XIV Pacific Games in New Caledonia features Volleyball
The 14th Pacific Games are underway in New Caledonia. The sports gala of 28 games started off on August 27 and is scheduled to continue to September 10th. Athletes from different sports have gathered in the city of Noumea in New Caledonia to showcase
their sports and volleyball is also featured. Both men’s and women’s teams from the Pacific Islands are participating in the competition. The roster of the volleyball tournament at 14th Pacific Games includes teams from:
American Samoa Fiji Islands Guam New-Caledonia Papua – New Guinea Samoa Tahiti Tonga Tuvalu Vanuatu Wallis & Futuna
Each Island has two teams in the competition except Vanuatu, which is playing with only a female team.
Day 1 – 29-08-2011
The Pacific Games Volleyball Tournament was officially opened on August 29th. Opening day of the tournament featured two matches in each gender category. In the men’s section, teams from Fiji Islands and Papua–New Guinea was featured in the first
match. New Guinea squad proved to better side and defeated the opponents by posting a 3-1 (26-24, 32-34, 25-17, and 25-20) win. The Second match of the first day brought American Samoa in competition with team from Guam. The former breezed past Guam team in
straight sets and clinched success 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, and 25-21).
In the female category, teams from Tuvalu and Vanuatu clashed in the first match, while girls from Samoa crossed paths with the team from Papua–New Guinea. Vanuatu made a clean sweep and defeated Tuvalu in three sets, 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, and 25-19). Likewise,
Samoa won the first pool fight by clinching a 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, and 25-22) victory over New Guinea squad.
Day 2 – 30-08-2011
Men’s team from Papua–\New Guinea continued with success on the second day of the tournament and bagged another win by defeating American Samoa. They had a tough competition with American Samoa but managed to overcome their rivals in four sets. New Guinea
was given the status of winners as they posted 3-1 (27-25, 25-13, 22-25, and 25-16. On the other hand, teams from Tahiti and Tuvalu played their first match on the second day of the tournament. Victory graced Tahiti as they dominated the opposite side with
a score of 3-0 (25-11, 25-6, and 25-12).
The female division also featured two matches on the second day. The team from Wallis & Futuna Island grabbed their first win of the tournament by downing the Guam women. The match spanned over four sets, while Guam could only secure one set in the whole
match. The final score of the game was 3-1 (25-19, 25-13, 23-25, and 25-20). In the next match, Tonga was defeated by Fiji Islands in consecutive sets. Fiji Island put up a better show of volleyball and held off rivals for 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, and 25-17) victory.
Day 3 – 31-08-2011
Third day of the tournament had a busy schedule as four matches were played in each gender category. Teams from Tahiti, Fiji Islands, hosts New Caledonia, and Wallis & Futuna emerged as winners in men’s matches. They defeated Samoa, American Samoa, Tuvalu,
and Guam, respectively.
In female competitions, Fiji Island, Samoa, New Caledonia, and Tahiti were successful on the third day. Wallis & Futuna, Vanuatu, Tonga and Papua – New Guinea could not perform up to the mark and finished the day on the losing side.
