Question:

XP Antivirus 2008, another victim?

I deleted all the files someone said to on this site a few hours back, but my computer is amazingly slow since then, almost everything I download is corrupt, and my anti-virus automatically shuts down. Any way to kill all remnants of this thing?

  1. There are two options.

    1) take out your hard disk and install as secondary drive in another PC that have a good anti-virus program. Boot up on that PC and scan your infected hard disk.

    2) You can install CLAMWIN.

ClamWin is a Free Antivirus for Microsoft Windows

that uses the GNU General Public License by the Free Software

Foundation and is free (as in freedom) software.

There is a portable version of ClamWin where it can be install into an USB pendrive as small as 64 MB.

First use another PC to download Clamwin portable anti-virus

and install Clamwin portable on a USB thumb drive.

Update the latest anti-virus definition files.

Set the preferences to remove virus.

    How to configure ClamWin

    http://support.real-time.com/open-source...

When the USB pendrive is ready.

    Disable system restore.

Start the infected PC in safe mode by pressing F8.

Run the Clamwin Anti-virus that is installed on the USB drive to scan the infected PC.

Scan all hard drives for viruses.

To restore ability to change your desktop settings and select a different wallpaper and screen saver do the following:

    Start, run

    type Gpedit.msc

Navigate to User configuration, Administrative Templates, Control Panel, Display

Right click on Remove Display in Control Panel

Click on Properties and select Disabled

Do the same steps to change the following attributes to disabled:

    Hide Desktop Tab

    Prevent changing wallpaper

    Hide Appearance and Themes tab

    Hide Settings tab

    Hide Screen Saver tab

You should now be able to use your computer normally and change the wallpaper to something other than the warning message Antivirus XP 2008 set it to.

After removing the virus, install c**p cleaner (ccleaner) to get rid of the left over setting in the windows registry.
