I have an old Windows XP disc to a Dell Computer with a valid key. I tried loading the disc on a custom built PC’s, -- it loaded many drivers but stalled when the lower left screen read Windows is loading system. So my question is can I use this Dell disc or what do I need to do…he don’t have a disc for that PC.

  1. As you know by now, there's other issues ... you should have gotten a mssg "can only install on a genuine Dell", etc.  OEM disks generally ck for that specific brand of hardware they were made for (Dell, HP, whathaveyou).

But I have some more thoughts I want to share.  What hardware, I wonder, does the OEM Win XP ck for? Something in the motherboard?--the HD?  CPU? I don't know!  But I bet somebody in a geek forum somewhere knows.  And I bet there's an available workaround ... just thoughts.

Cuz we're getting ripped on this whole "free OS with PC" gig.  I assure you, you paid for it.  But you have an OS that can't be applied to any other PC.  If you're like me, maybe by now you've got a collection of these "one-time" Windows OS discs, fairly useless.

It's nuts.  And if I change out too much hardware on my Dell or Gateway, will the OS cease to function? We want to know! :-)

  2. normally dell windows discs will only work on the pc it was originally installed on, you will most likely need to buy another copy of windows. sorry
