XP SP2 - SP3 F.A.S.T. problem - help please!?

My parents computer had been not getting slow and some programs weren't installing, particularly XP SP3, so we had it taken by a computer professional to have a bit more RAM put in and for windows to be re-installed. The professional said that it might be necessary to completely wipe the hard drive, and that we should back up our data, which we did using the 'Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.'

Well 2 week later we have our the computer back, all nice and working, and installed with SP3. The professional said that he had to wipe the hard drive, but assumed this to be no problem as we had backed up all our data and settings.

The first thing we did was try to run F.A.S.T. again to upload our settings, BUT..

We get an error message saying "Your migration store was created with a previous version of Files and settings transfer wizard. Please collect your settings using the current version of files and setting transfer wizard"

After looking at the microsft website, I found a articail which explains that basicly the version of FAST on SP2 is different from that on SP3 and that a paricular hotfix is needed on the 'old' computer, and that you try again. (The artical is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950728/en-us?sd=gn )

This obviously is impossible as the 'old' and 'new' computer are the same, and the orgional data source has been wiped.

Can anyone please suggest anything that might help. We have tried to contact the computer proffesional, but as yet no reply.

  1. I would uninstall SP3, which will take the pc back to SP2 status.

Restore your files, then install SP3 again afterwards (if you want to).

Bit of a pain in the neck, but worth it to get your files back I would've thought!

  2. You can always uninstall SP3 and revert back to SP2, load your backup then update to SP3 again.

Otherwise, if your problem matches the Microsoft article then download and install the hotfix at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...

  3. scusk

  4. if i was you i would down grade back to sp2 and install the data. then once all of it is installed you can go back to sp3 using the microsoft website as a source. www.microsoft.com

evan if it wont alow you to upgrade to sp3. there is nothing wrong with sp2. if your computer has been formatted and re installed with windows then sp2 will be great.

  5. I agree with CST - sounds like the only option.
