XP antivirus 2008 - I need Help!?

I got the virus the other day. I had just turned on my computer and i noticed 3 shortcuts on my desktop that werent there the day before. Then i started to get the pops ups. im worried that my system will crash. I feel uncomfortable doing the steps that i have read about because i dont want to mess up my system. i have just downloaded a trial version of avg internet security 8.0 in hopes that it will curb my problem until i can get it fixed. Help!

Download, install, update and select Quick Scan

Antivirus programs may find traces but will NOT remove them as they are malicious codecs, Malwarebytes removes them completely.

This will take about an hour.

Switch off System Restore - you can re-start it if you choose to when your computer is clean.

Install the free version of SUPERantispyware http://superantispyware.com Update it and run a full scan.

Install ccleaner http://ccleaner.com - run the ccleaner and the registry scans and delete what they find but repeat the registry one until nothing is detected.

Reboot and job done.

I'd also recommend you install a good anti-virus program like avast home edition http://avast.com

and another good anti-spyware program is spybot search and destroy http://safer-networking.org
