XVII Peru International: Wisnu Haryo Putro ousts Stefan Wojcikiewicz in Men’s Singles round-of-16
Italy’s Wisnu Haryo Putro proved his mettle and secured his place in Men’s Singles quarter-final after beating his higher ranked opponent Stefan Wojcikiewicz of Canada in the round-of-16 battle at XVII Peru International 2012 in Peru, on Thursday, April
12.
Wisnu, who is un-seeded in the tournament, showed his hunger for victory when he played to his full potential and overpowered the fourth seeded Stefan in a mouth-watering fight that took 54 minutes of attacking game from both players.
The Italian was underdog in this match as he was up against a seeded player who had better chance to win the contest. However, Wisnu defied all odds and proved his worth in an elevated manner.
On the other hand, Stefan could not deliver an expected performance and lost to his spirited opponent in three games.
Wisnu found a positive start by playing safe badminton and did not show any sign of urgency. He was focused in executing his shots and remained successful in manipulating the loopholes of his higher ranked Canadian rival.
Until the one-minute break, Wisnu was in good position in the game as he was ahead of Stefan on the board.
After the break, Wisnu did not lose his focus and maintained pressure on Stefan who could not find a good rhythm. The Italian did not face much trouble and took the opening game with a 21-17 score on the board.
In the second set, Stefan powered his way back into the battle as he played remarkable badminton and did not let his lower ranked rival to dominate the pace of rallies this time.
Until the interval in second set, Wisnu was trailing far behind Stefan on the score board.
After the break, Wisnu tried his best but failed to catch up his Canadian challenger in the entire set and lost it with a one-sided difference of 13-21.
In the decider, Wisnu changed his tactics and stunned his opponent by playing incredibly fast badminton. He managed to set up an impressive gap until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Wisnu continued his sensational performance in the contest and won the final set with a stunning margin of 21-6.
Wisnu emerged as winner of this pre-quarter-final battle with a 21-17, 13-21 and 21-6 on the board.
