XXI Pan Am Junior 2012: Katherine Wynter stuns Mariana Freitas in Women’s Singles showdown
Jamaica’s Katherine Wynter proved her mettle when she put up spectacular show of flawless badminton and overpowered Mariana Freitas of Brazil in Women’s Singles clash at the XXI Pan Am Junior 2012 Team Event on Sunday, July 22, in Canada.
The underdog Katherine played remarkable badminton while playing against Mariana and proved her supremacy on court by playing at her maximum speed. She won the battle without losing any game to her Brazilian rival.
The in-form Katherine worked really hard in opening set of the contest and won it with a tight margin. However, she found a good rhythm in opening rallies of second game and easily bagged it to end up the fight in straight sets by taking just 23 minutes.
On the other hand, Mariana failed to overpower her rival on crucial moments in the match as she could not play with confidence and remained quivering on court.
The Brazilian shuttler tried her best to stop the progress of her Jamaican rival but failed to prove her worth and lost the battle in two sets with a reasonable margin.
Both players put up staggering performance in opening rallies of first game as they played at their best speed and also remained close on score board.
Mariana tried to take advantage by injecting power in her shots but failed to create any trouble for her rival who was playing with a wonderful ease.
Until the mid-game break in first set, both shuttlers failed to create a considerable gap on the score board.
After the interval, they continued pushing each other without letting the pace of rallies down and reached at the crucial stage of 20-20.
At this critical stage, it was Katherine show put up stunning show of aggressive badminton and remained successful in taking two consecutive points to bag the game with a tight margin of 22-20.
In the following game, Katherine remained in commanding position as her rival could not maintain her speed. The Jamaican shuttler was ahead on score board until the interval.
After the break, Katherine continued her killing run and easily wrapped up the game with a huge 21-14 margin on the score board.
The in-form Katherine emerged as the winner against Mariana in straight games with a convincing score of 22-20 and 21-14.
