The Spanish midfielder was more than happy with Real Madrid’s victory over their local city rivals, Atletico Madrid.
Real Madrid faced a dip-in-form towards the end of March and start of April. The Spanish giants commanded a 10-point lead over their arch-rivals, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604, during the start of March but with three draws, Los Blancos lost the lead and allowed Barcelona to
come within touching distance.
Real Madrid’s first poor performance came in against Malaga. The two Spanish sides drew the match 1-1, with Real Madrid taking an early lead but a free-kick from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Santi-Cazorla-c32505 was enough to end the game in a stalemate.
Their second draw was their fixture against Villarreal. The relegation-threatened Yellow Submarine were on their toes as they were able to draw 1-1 against the league leaders.
Madrid’s last draw was against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valencia-c40863, who were resilient throughout the game which took place at the Santiago Bernabeu. Madrid created a lot of chances throughout the game but Valencia were on their toes while defending against Jose Mourinho’s men and
the match ended in a goalless draw.
With these three draws, Madrid dropped their 10-point lead to 4 points and allowed Barcelona to come close to winning the Spanish La Liga title for the fourth consecutive time.
After Barcelona winning their midweek fixture against Getafe, they were only a point behind Madrid and Los Blancos had to beat their local city rivals, Atletico Madrid, in order to maintain the lead.
With http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Xabi-Alonso-c37045 was ecstatic about maintaining the lead over the top.
While speaking to the press, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alonso-c5254 was quoted as saying:
“We knew taking three points was crucial tonight (Wednesday) and we played an intense game to earn a victory that give us a big confidence boost.”
“The key was to drop no points and we must focus on one game at a time because every match is vital. The first two goals boosted our confidence and were decisive. We’re satisfied. We’re happy for defeating a great team and for taking three fundamental points
in a derby.”
“We must take things slowly and focus first on our match against Sporting Gijon, who should be respected because they have a lot at stake.”
Real Madrid will be hosting Sporting Gijon on Saturday and will try and take all three points on offer, in order to maintain the 4-point gap over Barcelona in La Liga.
