The midfield maestro has called on his teammates to be at their best in order to lead La Roja to the first ever Euro title defence in history.
Real Madrid’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Xabi-Alonso-c37045 believes that the Spanish national side will need to do better than the last time in order to retain the title they secured in 2008.
As La Roja Furia prepare for the Euro 2012 in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ukraine-c3032 this summer, they are set to come across competition from the finest teams across the continent.
Interestingly, no team has ever successfully reclaimed the European Championship title before. However, Spain are still rated among heavy favourites to emerge victorious from this year’s edition of the coveted tournament.
The Madridista is of the opinion that things have changed between his side’s last European success, and defending the title is bound to be far more difficult than winning it the first time.
Winning the Euro 2008 marked an important highlight in the history of the Reds as it was their first European title in 44 years.
To the joy of their fans, more success followed the glory of 2008 as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/South-Africa-c757 two years later.
However, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alonso-c5254 is of the opinion winning the silverware this time around is bound to be harder than winning the World Cup.
While talking to reporters, the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 player was quoted as saying:
"It gets harder and harder to continue winning. We have a good team, we have the experience, but there are also other teams who are well prepared and very eager. I think it will be even harder than Euro 2008 and World Cup 2010, because we will have to be
almost perfect to win the title."
"When we are with the national team, especially in a major international competition and when we are fighting for something like this, it does not matter the way the season ended. If someone won something, you congratulate them, if you won something, they
congratulate you, but you are fighting for something else here.”
Spain will begin their Euro 2012 campaign against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926 as they take on the former World Champions on June 10.
