Xavi Hernandez and the year 2010 (Part 3)
1st May: Barcelona were to play a crucial game against a very strong looking Spanish side Villarreal. The Catalan giants were away from home and it was a “must win” game for the Spaniards in order to take control of Spanish La Liga table. Josep Guardiola’s men were ready to perform and after a fabulous free kick from Xavi Hernandez. The Spanish Champions won the game 1-4 away from home, which helped Barcelona take another step forward towards retaining the Spanish La Liga title.
8th May: Barcelona were to face Sevilla while being away from home. The game was crucial, yet again, as Guardiola’s side “had’ to win it in order to stay top of the table as Real Madrid were chasing them only with a difference of 2 points. The game was won by Barcelona but Xavi Hernandez received his fifth yellow card of the Spanish La Liga season and that card suspended him from the final game of the season, which was against Real Valladolid.
16th May: Barcelona faced Valladolid in the last La Liga fixture, as they were to entertain a Spanish side at the Nou Camp. With the Catalan giants winning the game, Xavi Hernandez won his fifth Spanish La Liga title and that took his tally really close to the highest ever as only Antoni Ramallets and his coach Josep Guardiola are the two players that have managed to win 6 Spanish La Liga titles with Barcelona.
20th May: It was a day to remember for Xavi Hernandez as the Barcelona midfield maestro was named in the squad of Spain, which was to travel to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup 2010. The former Real Madrid boss Vicente Del Bosque selected a first team squad of the Spanish side and Xavi Hernandez was to become a crucial figure in the midfield of the Spanish national team.
9th June: Barcelona and Xavi Hernandez agreed to the terms and conditions of his new contract and the Spanish midfielder said, “I want to retire here”. It was simply clear the Xavi Hernandez was to live and die for Barcelona, his childhood club.
16th June: The Spanish team played its first fixture against an “easy” European side, Switzerland. The match ended in a shock 1-0 defeat for Spain and Xavi Hernandez played the full 90 minutes.
21st June: Xavi Hernandez became a crucial member of the Spanish side during the FIFA World Cup 2010. With the Jabulani ball not being the best ball out there, Xavi mastered the skill of one-touch-passing on it. The Spanish midfielder started during the second group stage game against Honduras. The midfield maestro performed for 65 minutes as Vicente Del Bosque’s side won the game 2-0 against the South American team.
25th June: The Spanish side were involved in a “must win” situation game, as they were to face the South American team Chile in the last match of the FIFA World Cup 2010 group stages. Xavi Hernandez was the one who helped David Villa score the first goal of the game. Later, Andres Iniesta scored the second goal for Spain to help the European side advance to the pre quarterfinal stage of the tournament as Del Bosque’s side won 2-1.
