Xavi Hernandez and the year 2010 (Part 5)
12th August: The Spanish midfielder was involved in all the games that the Spanish national team played during the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa but he was only given a vacation of a month. The Barcelona midfielder returned
back to training on this date to join up with the rest of the squad for the pre season.
16th August: A very special day for Xavi Hernandez. After performing extraordinarily well throughout the season, he was named in the selected 12 players list of the UEFA Awards. Xavi was not the only Barcelona player named in
the list as he was joined by Victor Valdes, Gerard Pique, Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta.
18th August: Barcelona were to play another official game and Josep Guardiola decided to feature him in the game and this date marked the 12th year since his debut with the first team of Barcelona which was against
Mallorca. Xavi Hernandez evolved into an outstanding player and it was all after Josep Guardiola became the boss of the Catalan Giants as the Spanish midfielder suited best with the “tiki taka” style of play that the former Barcelona man brought to the Blaugrana
side.
21st August: Barcelona were defeated 3-1 against Sevilla while they were away from home during the final match of the Spanish Super Cup. Xavi Hernandez did not feature in that match but on 21st August Josep Guardiola
decided to play his best men in the home leg of the match and it was Xavi Hernandez who made his season’s debut as he helped the team come back from a 3-1 loss to a 4-0 victory in the Spanish Super Cup as his side won the game and the first trophy of the season.
25th September: Barcelona were to face Atletic Bilbao in a crucial Spanish La Liga game. The Catalan Giants had to win in order to maintain their spot in the Spanish Primera Liga. The midfield maestro stepped up for his side and
scored the first goal in San Mames, the home ground of Atletic Bilbao as the Blaugrana wearing side were victorious as they won the game 1-3 away from home.
1st October: Xavi Hernandez was involved in a lot of games that the Spanish national team and the Barcelona team played throughout the year 2010. The Spaniard played a lot of games for them and showed consistency and it was obvious
that the 29 year old could simply not keep up with the pace of the game throughout the year and with the age the “tired” legs took their toll. It was on this date that the Barcelona midfield magician suffered from an Achilles tendon injury. This was the basic
reason why the coach and the staff of the Catalan club decided to rest him as he missed the next few matches for the Spanish club. Xavi Hernandez did show extraordinary form while being a part of the Spanish national team and Barcelona but it was obvious that
he needed some rest and despite the fact he had a key role in the team of Guardiola, he had to be rested so that he could be saved for the important games.
