Xavi Hernandez makes record appearance for Barcelona
Xavi Hernandez made history on Sunday as he made his 549th appearance for Barcelona to equal the club record set by Migueli in 1980s.
Xavi, a product of Barcelona youth academy La Masia, joined Barcelona in 1998. In a span of 12 years, he has developed himself into the powerhouse of the team.
30-year-old Xavi’s sweet moment was celebrated with a 2-1 victory over minnows Levante in Primera Division. Pedro Rodriguez scored twice in 47th and 59th minute to secure three points for Barca. Josep Guardiola was jubilant after a
narrow win and about Xavi’s milestone.
He appraised the top midfielder in post-match speech and said, “We wanted to win for him. He's had operations on his cruciates (ligaments), he's 30 and he's played 549 games.”
Guardiola has himself appeared in 300 matches for Barcelona and is hopeful Xavi can continue for a long time. Guardiola added, “If his tendons hold out, I think he could get to 700.”
Xavi wears captain’s band in absence of veteran Carles Puyol and was lucky to be leading the side on his special day.
Xavi commented on a memorable night and said, “I'm very proud to be able to wear this shirt and to match a Barcelona legend like Migueli. I want to continue defending these colours with all my heart and soul, and to win more titles. I am very pleased.”
In 1999, Xavi won La Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year award and in 2005, was awarded as La Liga Spanish Player of the Year.
Barcelona won UEFA Champions League in 2009 against Manchester United and the Spaniard was declared man of the match for the game. He was also twice announced World's Best Playmaker in 2008 and 2009.
In 2010, Xavi became World Soccer Player of the Year. With all these awards and honours, he still is strong enough to challenge the top players in the game.
