Xavier Mohammed dominates Men’s 200m IM final - 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships
Xavier Mohammed of Cardiff dominated the Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) final, to claim the gold medal on the concluding day of the 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships.
The ASA Championships are the second World Selection Trials, which intend to identify national swimmers for the British team to compete at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, during July. The first selection trials were held in March and those swimmers,
who failed to occupy gold medals in their events in the previous meet, are now provided with the opportunity to ensure their spots in Great Britain’s team to China.
Mohammed won the gold medal of the event in an extraordinary time of 2 minutes and 01.09 seconds. The 21-year-old Mohammed was 1.33 seconds away from his strongest rival, Lewis Smith of Warrender Ba, who touched the wall in a fabulous time of 2 minutes and
02.42 seconds to secure the silver medal. Adam Harrington of Loughborough University followed them on the podium, by capturing the bronze medal with a timing of 2 minutes and 02.73 seconds.
Mohammed’s team-member, Thomas Greenfield, stayed almost a second away from claiming the bronze medal and finished behind Harrington, by clocking a noteworthy effort of 2 minutes and 03.69 seconds. Roberto Pavoni of Brentwood also demonstrated his great
swimming skills and occupied the fifth fastest spot of the 200m event in a time of 2 minutes and 03.84 seconds.
Moments later, Harrington’s team-member, Luke Wood, appeared on the finishing wall by posting a time of 2 minutes and 05.26 seconds for the sixth fastest spot. Wood was almost two seconds behind Pavoni, whereas, he edged out his following swimmer, Lewis
Coleman by 0.07 seconds. Coleman of Sheffield finished his swim in the seventh fastest place, by posting a time of 2 minutes and 05.33 seconds.
Thomas Hollingsworth of Beau Sejour settled on the finishing wall as the eighth fastest swimmer, with a time of 2 minutes and 06.35 seconds.
The gold medallist expressed happiness upon his victory and claimed that he will try to improve his performance in future events, as he aims to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.
