Xavier wins 3rd stage as Honorio takes overall lead in 2011 Vuelta Ciclista A Venezuela
F.N Cabrera-Gb.Trujil team’s Xavier Quevedo won the third stage of 2011 Vuelta Ciclista a Venezuela on Friday, July 15. Honorio Machado maintained his overall leader’s yellow jersey.
The race started in Jusepin and ended in Aragua de Barcelona. Xavier took a total of 4 hours, 20 minutes and 6 seconds to cover the distance of 188.7 kilometres.
After winning the stage, Xavier said, "The stage was strenuous, very long and very rough with a temperature. The team left the race psyched to look, we wanted the win and logradnos has been a great success, teamwork. We were the great protagonists of the
stage so that we have prepared with such dedication.”
Gil Cordoves of Alcaldia De Maracaibo was the runner-up and Randal Figueroa of Fundadeporte-Carabobo was in the third place.
A total of 145 cyclists crossed the finish line with the same timing of the sprinter. Victor Leon of Lara-Bco.Industrial V tried his best to catch the leading cyclists, but he failed and grabbed the 146th place with a difference of 7 minutes and 22 seconds
ahead of Drilio Martinez.
With 63 kilometres to go, a group of three cyclists made their first breakaway which included Pedro Sequera (Minis Ambiente-F.Rep), Rolando Trujillo (Trecolli-Gober Bono), Edison Paredes (Trecolli-Gober Bono).
All of them gain a lead of few second over the peloton, with only a few kilometres to go Pedro Sequera maintained his pace and took the first sprint and second sprint.
Fernando Briceno increased his pace and worked with the other two cyclists, Camilo Moyano and Jose Garcia. However, Fernando launched the attack and took the third sprint. Darwin Urrea managed to gain a lead and took the fourth sprint.
But in the final few kilometres, Gil Cordoves showed his good effort and tried to take a lead, but Xavier crossed the finish-line ahead of the other cyclists.
Xavier further added, “I am very proud to provide this victory to my family. My father accompanied me in the race, and Professor Nelson Cabrera whom I taught everything. I also dedicate this victory to all Trujillo, the fans, our sponsors, the team management.”
Honorio Machado took an overall lead with a timing of 8 hours, 40 minutes and 16 seconds. The stage winner, Xavier, was the runner-up with 3 seconds behind Honorio.
Marvin Angarita finished third and Gil Cordoves was in the fourth place with a difference of 5 seconds.
The next stage will start in Zaraza and all the riders will cover the distance of 55.2 kilometres.
