I have heard that the Xbox 360 DVD player is not very good, but I am wondering if it would be better than a standard DVD player. You my Xbox is hooked up to my HDTV via component cables, but I also have a standard DVD player hooked up via composite. Which would look better?

  1. Dont buy the xBox HD drive.  But with the connections you describe, the xBox set to 480p with component cables would be 10 times better picture than the DVD player with Composite.

Composite (single RCA cable colored yellow) is nearly the worst/most compromised type of video connection.

Component cables can carry every type of signals from 480p, 480 - 1080p.

The xBox HD drive will send 480p over those cables and it will look a lot better.

But a Toshiba HD-DVD player is now CHEAPER than the xBox add on drive. It gives you true HD video (720 & 1080) and if you use a HDMI cable - it will up-convert standard DVD's for you.

Buy your HDMI cables from either BlueJeans or MonoPrice.

  2. you shoud've gotten a ps3.

  3. The output would be similar with the connections all the same. If you mean digital composite then your dvd player will outperform your Xbox.  I'm not sure exactly, because you haven't specified.  On the whole, digital is better than analog (RCA connectors). Also realize that your dvd player is probably much cheaper to replace than your Xbox, so if your going to use one or the other to watch movies, be smart and use the dvd player.  Save the Xbox for gaming.

  4. Xbox 360 is a dvd player and the video output is going to look the same as a standard dvd player.

If you have a computer hooked up to your HDTV then your computer will upconvert all your DVD's to near HD quality and look much better then360/standard DVD player. Just download VLC media player and you should have no problems.
