Xbox 360 Dashboard update?

I read that there will be a Dashboard update in the near future and I watched a video on Gametrailers.com where they did a demo for it. Long story short, the background had no theme and instead of gamerpics, they had a new avatar thing that looked kinda like a mii. Has microsoft announced what will happen to our background themes or gamerpics and will we lose them in favor of avatars?

You will have the option to keep the old dashboard if you really want. Microsoft hasn't really said much about it though.

• Avatars will be used in XBLA games, Xbox 360 retail games and Xbox Primetime games.

• Avatars will be available for everyone, even Xbox Live Silver members. If you don't like them, you can still use gamerpics instead.

Microsoft has promised that the background themes will be usable in the new interface, and that they would look somehow better.  Nobody knows exactly how the old themes will be integrated into the new interface.
