Question:

Xbox 360 Error E74? Whats going on?

Now, I've already used google and looked up previous Xbox questions regarding this error message on my Xbox 360. I've found various answers that weren't particularly helpful, and I was curious as to what exactly the problem is? I've tried several ways to fix it... except for getting a new AV cable. I don't have the money to purchase a new one quite yet. Is there a way to fix it without sending it to Microsoft? How long does it normally take to get your Xbox back if you send it in? Thanks in advance.

  1. The E74 error means it's an AV cable error. The only way to fix it is to buy a new cable and MS can't do anything for you. Third party cables can be found for $15.

  2. Chances are it's NOT the AV cable so don't waste your money.

    Llamma website says;

    "If the cable is known to be working then there is a 90% chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip connected directly to the AV cable) in rare cases it is the GPU."

    However, on every Xbox 360 I've fixed (and there have been quite a few!) it was the GPU lifting off the motherboard but not enough to cut the signal altogether so I don't think Llamma is quite right but nonetheless it's not just a simple AV cable problem.

    You CAN fix it without sending to MS by fitting an X-CLAMP KIT. But why would you if it's in the year warranty. Just get MS to sort it for free. If it's over a year then tell MS that you get E74 sometimes and no pic with 3 red rings other times cos then it falls under the 3 red ring extended warranty and they'll fix for free.

    Like I said, an x-clamp kit would fix it but would also void your warranty. If you wanted to go down that route I sell the kits on Ebay.co.uk (just look up XBOX_EXPERT on the Community page).

    However, in your case I would get MS to fix. Takes about 2 months but is totally free and they get a courier round to pick up from you. Put it in a box (not the Xbox 360 box cos you won't get it back). Hope that helps!
