Xbox 360 Media Extender Slow with Router WRT54G?

My Xbox 360 has Media Extender running on it, and it is incredibly slow(30 to 45 second delay). The 360 is hooked directly up to the Linksys WRT54G Router by Ethernet Cable. The Computer(Laptop) is hooked up wirelessly to the router. The 360 is connected to the computer, but it is very slow. I wish to avoid buying the Network Adapter, so please don't suggest that.

One last thing The laptop is the only comp in the house, my desktops proccessor fan is broke.

  1. You have the router connected to the router, as well as the 360. You should NOT also have the 360 connected to the computer.

  2. Buying the wireless network adapter will actually slow down the the speed more because it will have to go from wireless to router and wireless again, the ethernet connection is much faster.  If possible hook the laptop up to the router with ethernet also, since it offers nearly double the bandwidth as 802.11g.  What wireless speed is your laptop connecting at?  If you double click the wireless icon on the tasbar, it will come up with speed.  The speed may change some but the max will be 54Mbps.  If it is only 11Mbps your laptop may only be able to do 802.11b, and this will be too slow for streaming.

Also you will have delays if anyone is using the laptop while streaming.

  5. You have a compatible router.   Hmm..  I'm sorry I don't have your exact setup, but there are a couple things I can think of that may have something to do that.

    1)  If you are in fact trying to stream high-definition or other high-resolution video from your laptop, over your wireless 'G' network, to your XBox 360, that might not cut it.  Does the video 'hiccup' or stop and start intermittently after it start playing?  This might be an indication that eating up almost all the available bandwidth on your network.  The delay at the beginning might be the XBox having to 'buffer' enough video to start playing.  Look up the term buffering, I've talked this one to death.

    2) Snoop around at the first link I provided (below) and there are several router settings that this site suggests to use XBox360 Media Center.  This is a site that I used to set up my router when I had problems playing HALO 3 online.  Please be careful, I can't support this if something on this site is wrong, it looks OK though.

    3) Snoop more at the second site, and if you click on your router, Microsoft recommends you update the firmware to a certain version, and also turn off a particular feature of your router.  (And if you look really close at the screenshots on the first link, they're using a different version so.. this should be fun =) )

I would suggest try the first site then the second.  Again, take care, hope this helps.
