Xbox 360 overheating issues

recently while i play my xbox, it will overheat and my tv will display a bad image, like on call of duty it will look kind of wavy and disorentated. um its not a 360 pro its an elite and its the first time its been doing this. an way to keep it cool? also its been used on its side not standing up, but its been elevated and not kept in a case

Ensure both the 360 and the power supply have proper ventilation.  It sounds like your 360 has proper ventilation, but your power supply also needs ventilation.  Just keep it out in the open, not encased in anything.
