Xbox 360 shut off while playing then shows rrod?

i turned it back on after 15 min and it worked but i shut it off as a precausion

my son had his only 2 days when the dreaded red ring showed up, he turned it off fast, then unplugged it, then plugged it back up and it was ok for the next 3 days or so. but his sister got him the fan for it and it stays cool now, we think it was getting to hot. He is really hoping it will be ok.
