Microsoft is attempting to get another gaming demographic hooked on its motion control peripheral, the Kinect, as it targets couch potatoes and the more lazy segment of gamers.
Ever wanted a Kinect for the Xbox 360 but knew that you were too lazy to ever get around using it to deflect red balls back where they came from? It seems that someone in Microsoft had the same issue too and worked really hard to ensure that gamers could enjoy the Kinect experience regardless of the fact of whether they were standing or sitting.
It turns out that the Kinect technology has come a long way from being mocked as Earth’s last defence against the red balls, and is making serious progress on expanding the limits of the technology.
Development on Fable: The Journey, as well as the axed ‘Milo’ project, have led to a number of developments in terms of how the Kinect tech can be used and Gary Carr, the creative director of Lionhead studios explained that the those improvements and breakthroughs would be shared with other developers.
He said, “We are sharing our technology. Microsoft will float that out to everybody; our seated is now their seated and every new update of the dev kit will have that in there.”
He explained how the seated tech came out of the development of the now scrapped project, Milo.
“We put in seated games straight out of Milo.” Carr pointed out, before continuing, “Seated exists because we brought the technology in from Milo…and there’s also audio empathy which is a system that we use for the horse (in Fable: the Journey).”
He also pointed out that the studio had worked on Milo for over a year-and-a-half before they scrapped it and moved on to Fable, claiming it was the logical thing to do. Carr said, “We've got this team of experienced Kinect developers and this Fable franchise: one plus one probably equals a good idea.”
Carr seems optimistic about the first true AAA Kinect experience to be released as the other games only feature Kinect compatibility and are used sparingly. However, Fable: the Journey could just change all of that when it hits stores.
