no one really does monthly anymore, you can just put in a credit/check card in the xbox and but 12 months for 50 dollars, you can also go to a store and buy a card with a code... there are also 3 months for 20bucks and 1 month for $10...you can just renew it when it expires or start a new one.

The membership levels are Gold & Silver

Silver is free.. Gold you have to pay for..

The main difference is that Gold allows unlimited online play.. Silver you can only play online with games which have a seperate subscription to play or on special free play weekends..

There are different ways to pay for Gold membership.. You can pay with a credit card on your Xbox itself or you can buy prepaid cards in stores or online..

Buy.com is usually the best place to buy Xbox Live Gold prepaid cards (second link below).. You can buy a 13 month card for $43.99 with free shipping.. I have seen them for < $40 there sometimes too..   They also currently have the 1 month cards for $5.91 and 3 month cards for $17.22..

If you buy multiple cards they will just add months to your account.. so you buy 3 of the 13 month cards and your account will be good for 39 months..

Xbox Live Gold is a subscription service and there is no way to buy a one time unlimited subscription forever.  You don't need to keep buying cards though.. once you have a subscription you can have your credit card information saved and they will rebill you every year so it never expires..

Another thing to be aware of is that the Xbox Live Gold subscription is on a per user basis.. so if you and your brother both want to play online with your own gamertags you will have to each buy your own subscription..
