Can you get online with a xbox 360 by connecting the ethernet cable from the Xbox to a laptop if the laptop is connected to wireless router?

yes u can connect  like that but you are gonna need a wireless adapter if u have wireless internet.

That is true, however it is the same as an X-Box, both systems you just need to plug-in the internent cable to either system, a file on X-Box live might cost money, so be careful, so basically, you really don't have to do all those steps you wrote, just simply plug=in the internent cable to your 360, there should be a spot for it, this might not let you use the computer the same time you are playing your system.
