  1. The general rule of thumb is that HD cameras are not as sensitive to low light as standard definition cameras. It works a lot like high speed film which are lower quality, yet more sensitive to light. So, with more pixels, less light is absorbed. With that said, it would be unfair to compare a camera like the EX1 to the PD170 in particular, which is a low light wonder. The DVX100B is not as good in low light as the PD170, but still better than the EX1.

However, as far as HD cameras go, the EX1 is probably the best one as far as light sensitivity? Why, one being the larger image sensor--the EX1 has a 1/2" sensor, larger than any other under $10,000. The larger sensor helps in light sensitivity, but primarily deals with DOF. The EX1 and EX3 also fair a bit better in low light because Sony has recently improved the sensitivity in their CMOS sensor.

However, you must understand that it would be inappropriate to judge a camera solely on its performance in low light. There are other important factors to consider:

    (1) the EX1 produces true 1920x1080 HD picture quality unmatched by any camera in its class.

    (2) The larger image sensors in the EX1 make it much easier to manipulate depth of field--the EX1 is much more responsive than 1/3" cameras. It closely resemble the DOF of pro 2/3" ENG cameras which can cost $20,000 easily.

    (3) Being an HD camera, and a very nice one at that, the EX1 gives you the option of variable frame rates. You can choose from 24fps, 30fps and even 60fps for action shots, or slow motion (60fps on a 24fps timeline gives you professional slow motion).

The only time I'd ever consider low light performance a top priority would be if I were filming exclusively outdoors at night or dusk. However, if you shoot indoors, you can always light the set yourself--it actually looks better that way.

Looking at the EX1 and EX3, they are the exact same camera internally. I really don't see any point in spending $7,000 more for the EX3. It's only improvements were in the LCD resolution, and the interchangeable lens mount. Same lens (just interchangeable), same Image sensors, same picture quality.

Oh, and one last note: the EX1 bears Sony's coveted CineAlta title, one reserved for Sony's premiere cameras, some being over $100,000. That decision was not made lightly--the EX1 is an amazing camera made for professionals.

Well, I hope that helps a bit....
