Ximena Hermoso shocks Patricia Mayr-Achleitner in round one – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Local wild card entrant, Ximena Hermoso, trashed the Austrian challenger, Patricia Mayr-Achleitner in straight sets at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012 on Monday. She registered a 7-5, 6-3 victory against the 25-year-old to secure a place in the round of 16 at this clay court tournament held in Acapulco, Mexico.
Crowd favourite, Hermoso, put up a solid display of tennis to upset the world number 94 in an hour and 39-minutes duel. She not only edged the Austrian in their first face-to-face but also advanced into the second round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event.
Ranked 382nd in the WTA Premier Rankings, Hermoso confidently entered the Fairmont Acapulco Princess and drew the first blood in the third game to go 2-1 up. She lost her edge in the very next game but broke the Austrian’s serve again in the ninth game to put her nose ahead in the set once more. Despite levelling the scores at 5-5, the Mexican capitalised on another break chance in the last game and clinched the opener with a 7-5 score line.
The Mexican lost her serve once in the following set but she wiped out the final three games in a row to pull out the set with a 6-3 win.
Overall, the youngster produced a lower first serve share of 79 percent as compared to the Austrian’s 86 percent but acceptably marked 32 out of 50 points on it. The Mexican saved two out of five breakpoints she came across and cashed in six out of nine break opportunities to earn the glory.
Next challenge for Hermoso is the winner of the match between the fifth seeded Alexandra Dulgheru and the Slovakian starlet, Magdalena Rybarikova.
Eighth seeded Alberta Brianti bounced over Alize Cornet to join the Mexican into the round of 16. She broke the French’s serve three times but lost her serve four times to lose the opener with a3-6 defeat. However, she made an epic comeback and unveiled her true colours to oust Cornet in two hours and 17-minutes.
She will face either Netherlands’ Michaella Krajicek or Romanian contestant, Alexandra Cadantu.
