First off what do all of there stand for? And also aren't they for an HD signal? I just checked on my g-parents older tv and it has Y, Pb, and Pr, so I am just confused. Thanks for the help!

  1. Y, Pb, and Pr is Component video. A Component cable does send an HD signal.

  2. eric is correct, except the y/cb/cr was in use BEFORE y/pb/pr

    Y = Luminance

    Pb = progressive blue component

    Pr = progressive red component

    Cb = component blue

    Cr = component red

    .

    these are all analog video signals, it can be HD, but doesn't have to be

    HDMI and DVI are digital video signals

  3. Y carries luma (brightness) information.

    PB carries the difference between blue and luma (B − Y).

    PR carries the difference between red and luma (R − Y).

    Basically these three cables replace the YELLOW cable on a Red/White/Yellow component cable,

    and carry the video signal.

    It is NOT strictly related to HD, it was an early method

    used to deliver a more accurate and crisp picture to

    monitors.

    There is also a Y Cr Cb cable that works strictly

    with digital signals.

    Some HD systems provide this as an alternate

    method of transferring the signal instead of the older

    red/white/yellow cables.

    However, I would recommend using HDMI cables

    for the best picture experience with HD.
