  1. Because the tectonic plates are always moving, the areas where they meet build up pressure until they move to release the stress.  This movement causes the earthquake.  It may be where plates collide(the China quake), where they move sideways to one another (The San Andreas Fault), or where one plate subducts beneath the other (the Juan de Fuca Plate).


  2. Because the movement of one plate against another plate causes earthquakes.

  3. The earthquake itself caused by the sudden release of accumulated energy stored at the boundary of tectonic plates only. The tectonic plates are moving at the rate of about 50 to 100 mm per year due to convection of heat at asthenosphere.Therefore maximum number of earthquakes will take place at the boundary only.
