  1. 2 reasons. One it provides more survace area, colecting more morning dew. They also prevent several insects from eating there stems & leaves, but the hair is usually very thin on the leaves. I have several tomato plants at my house, and the hairs keep aphids and other small insects away, but not larger insects.

  2. collects the morning dew

  3. They're called trichomes.  Trichome function varies from species to species (since trichome structure isn't always the same).

The most consistent function is to ward off herbivores and insects, which is likely the function in tomoatoes.  They may also have a role in protecting from various elements, including frost, evaporation, and the sun.

  4. The hairy outgrowths on the stem donot allow the small insect to come closer to the stem. So they cannot penetrate their needle mouth inside the stem. Thus the stem is protected and the plant is saved from insect attack.

  5. Yes !!!

  6. lol.  to protect predators (caterpillars) from eating them and hence preventing the fruit developing.  You will notice the whole plant has these same hairs, its to protect it.

  7. At the level of pests such as aphids they present quite a barrier - so they are of a defensive nature.

  8. thats what she said
