  1. Fossils can only be found in sedimentary rocks because by definition those rocks are created from sediment on the bottom of lakes and oceans.  The animal dies and settles to the bottom.  Then it is covered by more sediment and becomes buried in the mud.


  2. Any creature unfortunate enough to fall into lava or (if possible) a magma chamber, would be vaporized and nothing would be left to preserve. Hence, no animal fossils are found in igneous rocks. Although, in certain instances some evidence of prior life can be found in volcanic rock such as casts from trees that were in the path of a lava flow, etc. Technically these are indeed fossils.

    Metamorphic rocks form in different ways and some fossils can be found in slightly metamorphosed rocks that were sedimentary originally. Its not terribly uncommon to see creatures in slightly cooked previously sedimentary rock.
