YE Yang makes a strong start at the Barclays Singapore Open
South Korea’s YE Yang carded a three-under par 68 in the opening round of the Barclays Singapore Open, to tie for the fifth spot on the leaderboard, on Thursday, November 8, 2012.
Paul Casey, Kwanchai Tannin and Chapchai Nirat were the other three played who shared the fifth spot with Yang.
The tournament is being played at the Sentosa Golf Club, Singapore, offering a prize purse of US$6 million to the participants.
Yang, who became the first Asian to record a major victory by winning the 2009 PGA Championship, was followed by a small bunch of Korean fans during the opening day.
The 40-year-old also came up to his fans’ expectations by finishing just two-strokes behind the clubhouse leader Thomas Bjorn.
The two-time Asian Tour winner started off on the back nine of the course and recoded birdies on the 14th and the 17th hole to reach the turn in two-under.
He then added another two shots to his scorecard by birdying the third and the sixth hole, prior to conceding a bogey on the seventh hole.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he stated that he was really motivated after watching his home crowd follow him on the course.
“It’s definitely good to see fans of your home country following you around in such a big tournament like this and under such hot and humid weather conditions. It gives me a lot of motivation,” said the Korean.
In the meantime, he also said that he will have to work really hard, in order to face the challenge of the difficult par-five seventh hole.
“I drew an eight-iron on the second shot, hit it about 20-30 feet away to the right and it went towards the hazard and I ended up with a bogey. It’s probably one of the worst shot I’ve hit this year,” said Yang of his only dropped shot for the day.
Bjorn, in the meantime, displayed a brilliant game and recorded six birdies against a lone bogey to sit on top of the leaderboard.
Simon Khan, Chinnarat Phadungsil and Pablo Martin tied for the second position with a four-under par score.
