I'm thinking of getting a membership there as a 16 year old. I'm extremely athletic in great shape but, and YMCA offers a lot more than other gyms.

YMCA- $19 a month + pool and free aerobics classes, lockers, towel service, gym, etc.

Other gyms- $39 a month no pool but more professional and more people like me who train really hard.

What should I do? I don't want to be looked down by others (not of YMCA) for going to a cheap gym.

  1. I would go to the gym that has more of what you need.  Don't worry about what others think.  In some towns, the YMCA is the only option.  People of all classes go there and don't think a thing of it.

  2. Check out their equipment before joining.  Most YMCAs are pretty nice but, some have poorly maintained equipment.  YMCA isn't a "cheap gym" it's a recreational center that has volunteers doing a lot of work, donations and sometimes sponsoring by the town it's in.

And, as far as others opinions: people are going to look much more at the shape you're in rather than your membership.  Paying $20 more a month for other's approval of your chosen gym is a waste of money.

  3. Are you sure you have the numbers right?  My YMCA membership in Florida costs 49 dollars a months.

As to going to a "cheap" gym, if one fits your needs I'd take the less expensive one.  Both 19 and 39 are both inexpensive.  A gym I used to go to was 90 dollars a month....  (but left as they stop filling my needs)  In some areas, memberships cost far more than 100 dollars.

There is no end in sight if you start choosing what you buy based on status.

  4. Woah! Give me the # of the YMCA that you're going too! Mine's like, 30 bucks a month!

Anyway, whoever cares what gym that you're at needs to get a life. If it's that cheap for you, go for it.

  5. If you are that worried about people looking at you because you are going to a "cheaper" gym, then pay the extra $20 and go to the other gym.

Are you sure the Y offers their services for only $19 a month??.Here it is a lot more than that.
