If i get a nice 2003 YZ85 will i have to rebuild it because i dont know how to. And i wont have any money left, can i just buy a new piston and put it in and clean the muffler out. And put new oil in the bike, and clean the air filter will that be good enough or will i have to rebuild the whole thing. I ride it about 10-9 hours a week im not racing i don't ride like a girl but i don't ride heaps hard, i just ride it normal.

  1. It is hard to tell when you will need to rebuild, a rebuild usually consist of new piston, piston rings, barrel. The 2 stroke design is very simple, if you are shown how to do it you can do it everytime, one of my friends has been rebuilding since the age of 13, 2 stroke that is.

10-9 hrs a week is a lot, you could get a year out of it if your lucky, remember to use your gears, if you are trail riding dont rely on powerband for xtra speed shift another gear, over use of powerband wears the engine out alot quicker!

In another question you asked whether you sshould get a yz 85 0r cr 80/85,

Listen, both are the same just as reliable and powerful but if you choose between the two make sure you choose the one with a sooner rebuild,

DONT get an ex-race bike unless its just been rebuild

    gd luck

  2. do you even know what's involved in a rebuild? the bike is like 3-4 thousand (new).... the rebuild kit (for a yz 125) is only a couple-few hundred... and like i said it's straight forward.... if youc an read, you can do it. it doesn't require special training, just patience and the ability to read a repair manual.

you wanna spend 5-7 hundred to have your top end rebuilt every year (maximum and that's for sissy trail riding) by someone who's willing ot read instructions and do it their self, that's your decision...

you want 2 stroke, learn to rebuild... if you CAN'T... DON'T get a 2 stroke.

you may not have ot rebuild it..... if you are buying one that has to have a rebuild, make sure you're taking this into account with the price..... if you don't mention it, they're surely not gonna offer it up....

if it's rebuilt today, you have a year, unless you hardly use it.... or use the h**l out of it (if  you use the h**l out of it, as in hard core racing, six months tops)

  3. why do you think it needs to be rebuilt.

if you do not know how to work on it

you will need to have a shop work on it.
