Yadier Molina and St. Louis Cardinals yet to reach an agreement on extension – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals’ catcher Yadier Molina stated on Tuesday, February 21, that while he is open to negotiate the terms for new contract, he has put a hold on talks for now. The statement came after reports surfaced that both the club and the player
have struggled to reach an agreement.
Yadier Molina also laid stress on the point that he was concentrating on winning another Championship now and not worry about the contract.
"I think they would have to come to me and start talking to me," said Molina, who is set to earn $7 million in 2012. "I'm open to talk. We were talking for the last two weeks, and we are no longer talking. I'm just trying to concentrate on winning another
championship and not worry about contracts. For now, we've stopped talking."
It is to be mentioned here that Yadier Molina is in the last year of the contract that he had with the St. Louis Cardinals. At a time when the club has already lost the likes of Albert Pujols and former manager Tony La Russa, Molina’s departure can deal
a significant blow to the Redbirds.
Speaking on Tuesday, the player seems willing to stay with the club provided the latter comes forward to discuss it. Interestingly, it was the same time period last year when Pujols attracted media attention as he said he would not talk about a new deal
after Spring Training had started.
The four-time Gold-Glove Award winner nonetheless has all his attention focused to training given the protracted nature of talks involving the extension negotiations.
However, Melvin Roman, who happens to be his agent, did indicate that the time was approaching when he had to talk about it.
"It could be tomorrow. It could be two days. It could be two weeks," Roman said. "If they want us to come back, we'll come back."
It is not very clear at this point as to what the St. Louis Cardinals are thinking. Molina, it goes without saying, will have an important part to play in retaining the Championship title for the club during the upcoming 2012 Major League Baseball regular
season.
