Yadier Molina praised for another NL Gold Glove Award – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals' catcher Yadier Molina on Tuesday, October 30, won National League Gold Glove Award for fifth consecutive season, adding another glory to his already illustrious career. While Molina was already one of the incontrovertibly favourite contenders for the Award, the official announcement was a cause of immense joy for the Cardinals.
Interestingly, the Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny had himself won four Gold Glove Awards in his distinguished career. It was during the playoffs that Matheny stated Molina stood as the best catcher he ever witnessed.
"I will stand behind the fact that Yadier Molina has impressed me more than any catcher I've ever witnessed," Mike Matheny had asserted which spoke volume about the excellence that Molina personified as a catcher.
He added, "The things that he does that are intangible you can only see by watching every day and watching [with] a very critical eye. But he has everything that you would ask for from a catcher defensively."
Having already won the Gold Glove Award, Yadier Molina is now bracing himself for yet another contest which is that of Rawlings Platinum Glove Award. The Award goes to the best defensive player and is to be decided through a fan vote.
The decision for that will come on November 9. After winning the Fielding Bible Award earlier this month and if Cardinals' catcher Molina wins the Platinum Glove Award as well, this will be the third Award that he will have gotten this month.
The 30-year-old catcher is now the part of prestigious group of four catchers who have won the most Gold Glove Awards; Ivan Rodriguez (13), Johnny Bench (10), Bob Boone (7) and Jim Sundberg (6). He is now fifth to have won most Gold Glove Awards with five.
Molina expressed his delight over the nomination and subsequent winning of the Award, saying he felt honoured. While his team had won last year’s World Series, adding to the concomitant joy of winning NL Gold Glove Award, their bid this year did not see the light of day.
The Cardinals’ fans, nonetheless, will keep their fingers crossed not only for his sixth consecutive NL Gold Glove Award, but also for the team’s victory in the 2013 Major League Baseball.
