Yadier Molina shines as St. Louis Cardinals defeat Houston Astros 10-5 - MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ catcher, Yadier Molina had a notable day with the bat as he scored three runs with two RBIs and went 3-for-4 in the Cardinals’ 10-5 victory against the Houston Astros at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on July 25.
At the top of the first inning, Jason Bourgeois doubled to right-field but Michael Bourn flied out to left-field, Hunter Pence grounded out to second base and Carlos Lee grounded out to short-stop position. Similarly, Jon Jay lined out to centre-field and
Matt Holliday struck-out swinging without posting any run for the Cardinals, at the bottom of the first inning.
During the second inning, the Astros scored one run while the Cardinals posted three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Humberto Quintero singled towards centre-field and Jose Altuve added a single run for the Astros. On the other hand, David Freese, Molina and Nick
Punto each singled to complete a three-run campaign for the Cardinals.
The pitchers did not allow even a single run during the third inning. The Cardinals’ starter, Kyle McClellan pitched superbly as he surrendered just one run on six hits and pitched seven innings with an ERA of 4.15. He gave up only one earned run and had
five strike-outs on his 96 pitches. Molina hit a solo homer (410 feet) towards left-centre to give the Cardinals a 4-1 lead during the fourth inning.
The Cardinals blasted four runs in the fifth inning to advance their lead 8-1. Holliday scored a single run on the drive of Molina to left-field and Daniel Descalso added one run on the error of the Astros’ left-fielder Bourgeois. Colby Rasmus struck a two-run
homer (431 feet) to right-field and Molina contributed one run to finish the four-run fifth inning.
Sixth and seventh inning passed score-less. The Astros’ batters scored four runs at the top of the eighth inning to reduce their lead while the Cardinals blasted two runs to raise their lead 10-5. Lee homered (373 feet) towards left-field while Bourn, Bourgeois
and Pence each made one run to end the four-run campaign for the Astros.
At the bottom of the eighth inning, Skip Schumaker singled to left-field and Rasmus posted one run. The final run for the Cardinals was taken by Nick Punto when Jay reached towards short-stop on an infield single. With this impressive win, the Cardinals
are leading the four-game series 1-0.
