Yadier Molina’s three-run homer helps St. Louis Cardinals overpower Cincinnati Reds 3-0 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ catcher Yadier Molina had a remarkable day as he struck a three-run homer in the Cardinals’ 3-0 victory against the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on April 24.
Molina led off the Cardinals by hitting a solo home run to the Reds’ starter Edinson Volquez in the sixth inning. The other shining player in the Cardinals’ convincing win was their starting pitcher Jake Westbrook who did not give up any runs on three hits
in six inning pitches. He contributed in every discipline of his pitching as he struck out four batters as well and allowed just three walks.
The Cardinals had a good win record against the Reds as they defeated them in a home series in 2006. Westbrook had an exemplary season so far as he pitched against the Washington Nationals with an ERA of 9.82 and gave away seven runs over three innings.
His continuous efforts, Westbrook clinched some unbelievable wins for the Cardinals as well.
The Cardinals’ first baseman Albert Pujols had not been able to score a run on a single hit and suffered rigidity in his right hamstring after the seventh inning. The Cardinals’ reliever Mitchell Boggs also did an outstanding job as he threw the ninth inning
without giving away any run on one hit and pitched for his third save. He struck out two batters and did not allow a walk.
Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman put in a combined effort as they added one run each to extend the Cardinals’ lead. They scored runs just after the first home run of Molina. Daniel Descalso had not posted a run because he was fouled out in the sixth inning.
For the Reds, Brandon Phillips took two doubles but did not complete it as he was shutout. He has not had a good season as he lost nine out of 11 games. Volquez pitched poorly as he permitted three runs of six hits, including three earned runs in five inning
pitches. He struck out seven batters in the first four innings, but not restricted the tail-enders by scoring.
The Reds’ relievers threw some impressive pitching but it was too late. Aroldis Chapman had no strike-out in one inning pitches and also did not give a run on a single hit. The Reds did not seem to have a winning plan through the game, as nobody truly participated
during the effort.
