Yadin Nicol and Raoni Monterio enter the quarter-finals of the Saquarema Surf Pro International
Australian surfer, Yadin Nicol, has jumped into the quarter-finals of the 2011 Saquarema Surf Pro International at Itauna, Saquarema, Brazil, on May 28.
Nicol beat American surfer, Cory Lopez, in heat one of the Men’s round of 12 with a fringe margin of 12.70 to 12.16 points (out of 20), while Lincoln Taylor of Australia was placed third with a total score of 11.24.
More importantly, Nicol secured 7.60 out of 10 points in the second wave against Cory Lopez.
Yadin Nicol said, “That was fantastic. I got stuck inside for the longest time and I just kept thinking about getting outside to surf those waves. It’s tough to paddle into the waves, but I gave it all I had on that last wave and I'm happy I got the score.”
Earlier, Nicol beat Brazilian surfer, Simao Romao, in heat two of the Men’s round of 24 with a total score of 10.33 to 7.43, while Cory Lopez won the third heat against Jadson Andre of Brazil with a margin of 11.66 to 7.00 points.
Raoni Monteiro of Brazil won the second heat of the Men’s round of 12 against his countryman Junior Faria, with a score of 11.17 to 11.00. Gabriel Medina of Brazil earned the third place honours with 9.10 points.
Monterio has directly jumped into the quarter-finals with his sensational victory in the round of 12. In his previous heat four of the Men’s round of 24, Monteiro beat Nathan Yeomans of USA with a score of 14.83 to 11.43.
Monteiro said, “Only a few people know about the right hander that breaks out there. My dad told me to pay attention because every once in a while that right would come in and I positioned myself and was lucky enough to catch that one. I surfed it to the
end and was able to win the heat.”
Junior Faria, who lost the vital heat against Brazilian surfer, Raoni Monteiro, in the Men’s round of 12, clinched heat five of round 24 against Australian surfer, Julian Wilson, with a total score of 14.00 to 9.27.
After the heat, he said that it was a fabulous win for him. He was quite lucky to capture an excellent wave early but it has been difficult, so he thinks that he should not concede further mistakes.
Junior Faria will compete with Lincoln Taylor of Australia in heat two of the Men’s round of 12 for the quarter-final place, whereas, Gabriel Medina of Brazil will be in front of USA surfer, Cory Lopez, in heat one of the corresponding round.
