Yahoo Messenger wiped out my network. What do I do?

I have a new Dell laptop that was functioning fine on my current home network for the past 3-4 weeks. My daughter and I downloaded Yahoo Messenger from http://messenger.yahoo.com/, and as soon as I tried to use it to add a contact, my whole network went down. None of the other computers could access the internet either.

I followed the instructions in my Linksys Easylink Advisor to connect my network back up to the internet. However, the network has now disconnected itself from the internet 3 more times in the last 12 hours. I ran a virus check with AVG, turned up nothing.

  1. I think you're looking for your solution in the wrong place, and I doubt seriously if the Yahoo Messenger installation has anything to do with the source of your problem.  From what you've said, it's possible that a virus is causing your problem, but I doubt this as  well.

I would re-check all of the network hardware connections first, then all the configuration settings.

You might also, run your system restore to restore to the point before the Messenger installation.  There will be a 'restore point' there.  If the problem persists, that immediately eliminates that installation as the cause of your problem.
