  1. how many times does this question have to be asked?

  2. Any country getting the most gold medals will be the champion and that's common sense enough. Since this time the USA is getting less gold medals than China, I guess Yahoo is taking care not to upset the general Americans who can't accept the fact that China is taking over the Games.Guess Yahoo is just being nice.

  3. The International Olympic Committee ranks by the number of gold medals. If there is a tie, then the number of silver medals is counted. If there is a tie in gold and silver, then the number of bronze medals is counted. This should be the official method. The official IOC website ranks medal counts this way, even for the Atlanta, USA, page.

The USA media and websites use whatever means to rank medals to have the USA at the top or close to the top, because it is good business sense to do so, to attract more target audiences, Americans, to read their materials.

Personally, being American myself, for this year, I think the US is the leading country of 2nd and 3rd place awards, while China is the leading country of 1st place awards. Some countries call silver and bronze, "comfort" awards. "You didn't win, but at least you got something out of it." Athletes go for the gold, not go for 2nd best awards. Maybe they should count how many times a country's national anthem is played instead.

  4. Typical yanks! Contrary to what they all think they are not the centre (or should i say 'center' of the universe!)

Interestingly, given China now has same total number of medals as the US (79) China is now actually ranked 1st on all US websites due to more gold medals. I bet this is killing the Americans! Let's now hear them say "it's because they have a bigger population"! HAHA!!!

Catch up America, the rest of the modern world now also uses the metric system too, you know metres, litres, kilometres etc Have you heard??

    Now...That's what I call gold!

  5. the first link is yahoo austrailia

  6. Maybe you shouldn't get all your news from Yahoo, Einstein.

The US has ranked the medal count by total medals for the last 50 years and has been the only country other than the former Soviet Untion to actually rank the medals.

China is having an outstanding Olympics and could achieve a record gold count.  If the rest of the world prefers to emphasise this that is terrific, but the US doens't have to suddenlty change a 50 year old system just becuase they are not the highest gold winner.

  7. Front page of Yahoo - not sure what you are talking about - but this is the site I check
