Yahov Toumarkin pockets Men’s 200m IM gold: Day two – 2012 Swedish Grand Prix, Uppsala
Yahov Toumarkin dictated terms to his competitors by pocketing gold medal of the Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on second day of the 2012 Swedish Grand Prix in Uppsala, Sweden on Sunday, February 5.
The 19-year-old Toumarkin experienced a strong battle from Simon Sjodin in the four-lap IM discipline. Sjodin remained dominant in the first lap of the race but his struggle was overpowered by Toumarkin, who earned a lead in the second lap and continued his thrashing pace until the fourth lap to secure gold medal of the event.
The 25-year-old Sjodin concluded first lap of the race in a time of 26.12 seconds while Toumarkin remained 0.31 seconds slower and ended his lap in 26.43 seconds. The situation reversed in the second lap, where Toumarkin went ruthless and touched the wall with a fastest timing of 56.23 seconds. He was trailed by Sjodin, who remained nearly one second slower and covered the equivalent distance with an effort of 57.19 seconds.
Toumarkin continued his notable efforts in the third lap and easily sustained his top spot by clocking a time of 1 minute and 32.68 seconds for the initial 150 metres of the race. With his persistent efforts, he stayed 0.53 seconds ahead of Sjodin, who completed his third lap with an effort of 1 minute and 33.21 seconds.
The final lap of the event was very decisive while the arena went wild with the neck-to-neck efforts of both competitors. Sjodin elevated his efforts in the final lap, but his struggle was cut short by Toumarkin, who advanced on the finishing end by producing a time of 2 minutes and 02.69 seconds.
Subsequently, Sjodin stayed just 0.18 seconds away from his former finisher and ended up second with an effort of 2 minutes and 02.87 seconds. The third spot of the race was secured by Gal Nevo, who was considerably slower from the silver medallist and reached the victory stand for bronze medal by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 07.53 seconds.
The crowd applauded for commendable efforts of all contestants while the winners received their accolades after the conclusion of session.
