Question:

Yamaha 1100 Tripple Wave Venture - Runs well at idle but not under load.?

I have a 97 Yamaha 1100 Wave Venture that is causing me problems. I talked to someone that seems to know Jet Ski mechanics and he said my problem was with a fuel filter at the carbs.

I can not find such a filter. And yes, I'm tring to do this blind without taking the motor out of that haul.

Here is what I was able to troubleshoot. It will start fine and run great at idle. However when you put a load on it will bog down to the point where it will shut off. I saw a previous post with the exact same problem but now resolve. I did find that if I used the choke, I could pull out and get up to speed then take the choke off and run like a bat out of h**l. Once I go back to idle I'm back to the same point. I figured running it would clear itout but it's still the same.

So my question, is there a filter at the carbs or not? I did replace the fuel filter and ran fresh gas through the motor.

If you can direct me to a How To" on teh web that woudl be nice even.

Thanks

  1. the bogging you described is a classic symptom of clogged carburetors.  Not a "filter", but the "jets" (small orfices that meter the amount of fuel entering the airstream thru the carb throat).

If choking the motor makes it run, that confirms the diagnosis.

The solution is to remove carb(s) from engine, disassemble, soak overnight in carb cleaner, blow through all passages with compressed air (or aerosol carb cleaner), reassemble with new kits, reinstall, adjust slow speed mixture s***w.

Don't let anybody tell you to spray carb cleaner down the throat of your carb.  Any solvent strong enough to clean the varnish off a carb will clean the lubricating oil right off the cylinder walls.

If you wouldn't run your engine without oil, don't run it on carb cleaner.
