Yamaha Factory Racing rider Ben Spies is content with his progress in the 2011 MotoGP season.
The American rider has scored a win at Assen during Yamaha’s celebration event, whereas in the 2010 season, he took two podium finishes at Silverstone and Indianapolis.
The 2009 World Superbike champion was called in by the Yamaha factory team to show his potential in the premier class of motorcycle racing.
Spies said, “The goal this year was to win a race and if we can win another one it would be great and then more. But that goal after last season when you’ve been on the podium and finished second, the goal is to win a race and we’ve done that.”
In the 2010 MotoGP season, Spies raced with Monster Yamaha Tech3 squad and became the rookie of the year with two podiums in his debut season.
Meanwhile, Valentino Rossi his made move to the Ducati Team which left a space for Spies up step up. Due to his promising performance in his rookie year, he was promoted to the factory squad. In the ongoing season, he has been able to fight and stay close
to the top five positions.
Spies added, “We had a rough start at the beginning but the last few weekends we’ve been consistent and always in the top five and on the podium and fourth. I’m happy with the way the last few runs have been going and it’s been good.”
The American rider aims to improve his pace in terms of catching up with the top fast riders. At present, he is in the second riders’ squad along Marco Simoncelli and Andrea Dovizioso.
Still with one win, a podium finish and three ‘did not finish’ statuses, he is pleased with his race pace and ongoing improvements. He is determined to get back at Brno to win a race.
Spies is sixth in the 2011 MotoGP world championship points’ table, whereas his teammate Jorge Lorenzo is at second position on the points’ chart.
