Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo leads championship into Silverstone – MotoGP news
Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo leads the world championship points table as the 2011 MotoGP season enters sixth round, the AirAsia British Grand Prix on June 12.
The struggle for the title will shortly come alive at the British circuit of Silverstone with Jorge Lorenzo in the lead. The most prominent change in the season was when Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa crashed at the Le Mans circuit and was ruled out of
the season for at least two events, including the upcoming one at Silverstone.
Following Pedrosa’s crash, his Australian teammate Casey Stoner was moving up towards the top slots. Stoner won the French Grand Prix and moved to second position on the points table. After another victory at Catalunya, Stoner closed the gap to 7 points
from Lorenzo.
The Yamaha Factory’s Spanish rider Lorenzo is a master of the Silverstone circuit. In the 2010 British Grand Prix, Lorenzo started the race from pole position and won it by setting a record fastest lap of the venue. The Spaniard called it his best race of
the 2010 MotoGP season.
With two consecutive wins, Stoner is ready to score his third consecutive victory and become the first Repsol Honda rider to score three wins in a row after Valentino Rossi who achieved the feat in 2003. With the British round, Stoner will reach the milestone
of 150 Grand Prix starts in premier class.
Stoner’s teammate at Repsol Honda, Andrea Dovizioso is holding the third place in the points table after a fourth place finish at the Catalan GP. In the 2010 British GP, the Italian rider was second on the podium and looks set to score another podium in
2011 after the French GP, where he finished second behind teammate Casey Stoner.
The 2011 Ducati Team new entrant Valentino Rossi earned third place on the podium at the French GP. It was his first podium finish with Ducati and first for the 2011 season. In 2010, the Italian was not able to race at the British event due to injuries.
Ducati team rider Nicky Hayden was fourth to finish at Silverstone. Hayden’s former teammate Stoner was one place down in qualifiers and race results in 2010.
Let’s see how this weekend turns out for all drivers at the Silverstone circuit.
