Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo wins Gran Premio d’Italia in Mugello – MotoGP news
Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo has won the Gran Premio d’Italia in Mugello to reduce his gap in the 2011 championship from Casey Stoner.
The Yamaha Factory team has earned a victory at its home event. In the last race in Assen, Ben Spies played his role to win for Yamaha on their 50th anniversary and now Lorenzo has given another success to his team.
The Repsol Honda riders, Casey Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso performed well and hard to keep the pace high in the race, but the Factory Yamaha M1s gave a tough challenge to them.
Most of the race was led by Casey Stoner, but he lost the lead in the last few laps to Lorenzo. The Aussie was also crossed by his teammate Dovizioso who took second place in front of his home crowd. Stoner finished on the podium on the third step.
Stoner now holds leads the world championship table with only a 19-point advantage from Jorge Lorenzo. However, the Aussie has saved his lead at Mugello and the upcoming German Grand Prix will determine the lead for the rest of the season.
The fourth and fifth places were unexpectedly covered by Ben Spies and Marco Simoncelli respectively.
The Ducati team riders lagged at the starting grid. Both riders from the local manufacturer Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden scored sixth and tenth places respectively.
In the first lap, Hayden went wide and lost several positions dropping to second last place in the race. With a big effort, he gradually made it to the tenth place while his teammate Rossi was placed at a poor 12th place on his home event. His
experience and determination helped Rossi to make it to the sixth place which is rather less disappointing than his qualifying position.
The Monster Yamaha Tech3 rider Cal Crutchlow retired due to a problem with his M1, while his teammate Colin Edwards made it to seventh position.
